Younger folks who might have watched last night’s second New York City mayoral debate may have wondered who was that guy calling himself Whitney Tilson.
But I know Whitney Tilson from the years when a major wing of the Democratic Party was advocating for privatizing public education and we were battling the Charter school vultures.
Whitney was one of them, a founding member of an pro-privatizing outfit called Democrats for Education Reform (DEFER).
Last night it seemed as if Joe McCarthy showed up, dressed as Whitney Tilson.
Tag teaming with his buddy, Andrew Cuomo, Whitney (or was it Joe) tried to go after Zohran Momdani in a “are you now or have you ever been a member” moment.
Whitney (or was it Joe) seems not to have received the memo that Red-baiting is not a thing anymore.
Americans calling for justice in Palestine are the new targets. Has he not read The Esther Project from the same folks who gave us Project 2025?
When Tilson was asked who he would rank second on his ballot, he said it would be Cuomo.
I suspect he may actually be ranking Cuomo first.
The fact is that education was not exactly a top tier topic in last night’s debate.
There was some discussion of class size mandates which seemed to be supported by everyone.
Everyone but Tilson, of course.
Tilson won’t be mayor of New York anytime soon.
But his tag team partner, Andrew Cuomo?
Rank Mamdani as #1.
#No Cuomo.
